Why Nominated: Laurie Dean has enthusiastically organized important activities and events to address the challenge of childhood obesity through her tireless efforts working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County over the past few years. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides youth ages six through eighteen (Littles) with an adult friendship that is consistent, ongoing, supportive, educational, safe and fun.
Laurie’s detailed and exceptional organizational skills helped create highly successful and fun athletic events to help encourage healthy eating and exercise, while encouraging strong UnitedHealthcare employee volunteer participation. The events ranged from healthy picnics, to water canoeing and sport kayaking ventures, from surfing big waves to awesome ice skating parties for hundreds of Orange County children and their Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Because of her dedicated volunteer work, she went above and beyond and created healthy living events for the Big Brothers and their Littles. In addition, she helped raise much needed funds to further promote physical activity and purchase bicycles and sports equipment.
“Laurie’s superior leadership skills and enthusiasm to encourage employee volunteerism to support Big Brothers Big Sisters makes her an outstanding employee who understands the valuable contribution volunteerism provides to the local community while promoting health,” said Dr Offenberg, Southern California Market Medical Director for UnitedHealthcare and 2012 Co-Chair the UnitedHealthcare of California Social Responsibility Committee. “Combating childhood obesity is one of UnitedHealthcare’s top concerns.”
