Congrats to Judie Vivian for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!
Nominating Organization: Susan G. Komen for the Cure Orange County Affiliate
Honoree Category: Human & Community
Why Nominated: Judie Vivian is a Breast Cancer Survivor and Founder of Standup for the Cure
Komen Orange County respectfully nominates Judie Vivian for 31 Days of Impact and selects her as a recipient of the Outstanding New Volunteer Award.
Judie went in for her well woman exam in May 2010 and in her routine mammogram, breast cancer was detected. She was extremely fortunate that her disease showed up under digital mammography. Following her mammogram, an ultrasound, a contrast MRI and stereoscopic biopsy it was confirmed that she had stage zero DCIS in her left breast. Sensing vulnerability, Judie and her surgeon opted for a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction, which proved fortuitous as early signs of DCIS showed up in the other breast tissue when examined at pathology.
Judie was fortunate; she was insured and was fit. During her recovery Judie participated in standup paddling. She claims it is the perfect exercise for breast cancer survivors as it strengthens the core and thoracic muscles. Instantly a light bulb went off … Judie was to start up Standup for the Cure, a paddling event with superstars from the paddling world, all to raise education, awareness and most important a lot of money so all women, regardless of their insurance status, have access to breast health services.
Judie gave herself a fundraising goal of $30,000 and attendance at 300. With that goal in mind she set out to secure the best of the best to move this event forward:
– Zane Schweitzer, world champion Standup Paddler
– Riviera Paddlesurf, which still provides an ongoing stream of donations for alll pink boards sold
– Sponsorships of all sorts to offset the cost of the event
– Guinness Book of Records, largest paddleboard lesson
– Maui Jim
– Ruth’s Chris Steak House
– Victory KoreDry
What was born out of simple exercise was now a significant and signature event in the standup paddling world. Over 700 attendees showed up and with Judie at the helm raised over $60,000. The goal for 2013 is 1,000 participants and to raise over $100,000.
