Why Nominated:  Rod McDermott is a talented leader on the Mission Hospital Foundation Board of Directors.  His spirit of volunteerism is showcased as he leads by example in a quiet way with little recognition for his good works.  Rod was instrumental this year engaging the community to support the new Neuroscience & Spine Institute at Mission Hospital. He participates further by collaborating with other volunteer leaders in promoting our mission, values and awareness.  In addition to his professional life, Rod is a private plane owner and pilot, and shares his time and energy flying those with medical needs from their homes to medical destinations for care.

Congrats to Jim Bastian for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!

Why Nominated:  Jim Bastian has been affiliated with Mission Hospital Foundation for three years. He is a brilliant leader who currently serves on the Mission Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. His “Spirit of Volunteerism” resonates not only through the foundation, but through the Mission Hospital family as well.  For the second year, Jim will be chairing the Mission Hospital Golf Classic. Last year, under Jim’s leadership, over $380,000 net proceeds were raised to support the lifesaving efforts at Mission Hospital.  Jim is committed to community service.  He is active in helping to raise money for numerous charitable organizations, which include Education for the Children, Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, Public Law Center and others.  He is also an active member of the Rotary Club, is a member of his church’s finance committee and has served as a youth sports coach for over 20 years.  Jim lives in Coto de Caza with his wife, Elizabeth, and their three children, Caroline, Katherine and John.

Why Nominated:  Mary Miyamoto is a passionate volunteer who is focused on early detection, on-going support and breast cancer education with the goal of eradicating this disease.  A survivor herself, Mary has devoted countless hours towards raising awareness and funds that provide the best care for those afflicted with breast cancer in our community. As the chair of Mission Hospital’s Valiant Women Breast Health Wall of Honor, she works with other Valiant Women to champion this cause. What makes Mary special is her soft-spoken manner, fueled by the passion and dedication of a grateful patient, while still fulfilling the many duties of motherhood.  She is lovely to work with and we are fortunate to have her as part of the Mission Hospital family.

Why Nominated:  Jig Bontrager is the personification of the word “volunteer”.  She gives of her time and herself with many organizations in our community, is active in her church, and delivers meals to the homebound.  An active member of Mission Hospital’s Auxiliary for 10 years, she was co-chair of the Light up a Life committee this year. This meaningful community celebration brings comfort during the holidays to our loved ones who have suffered a loss. The event is particularly significant to Jig who brought her many talents to a successful celebration this year.  Jig holds a special place in our Mission Hospital family and  is a pleasure to know and work with.

Why Nominated:  Mary O’Mara has been a faithful volunteer with Mission Hospital’s Auxiliary for the past 8 years devoting most of her time on the pediatric unit.  She took on the responsibility of co-chair for last year’s Light up a Life event which helps raise much needed funds for Hospice and Palliative Care at Mission.  Her military background aided in her efficient leadership and strong sense of commitment and responsibility while her Midwestern upbringing exhibits her warm and friendly personality.  She is a faithful friend, devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother.  She is always willing to go the extra mile, we look forward to many more years of working with her.

Why Nominated:  Diane Toedter has played a critically important role in the success of the Jack & Jill Guild since 1987.  She has held many board positions, including 2 years as President.  She has spearheaded the Holiday Card fundraiser for over 25 years, and just last year introduced our Comedy Night event.  In her current status as a Blue Ribbon Sustainer and Voting Life member of the Guild, Diane is a constant source of encouragement, motivation, and energy.

Honoree 2014 – Virginia DePaola

Congrats to Virginia DePaola for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!

Why Nominated:  Virginia donates her spare time to many organizations including; Special Olympics SO Cal, Grandma’s House of Hope, Knights of Columbus, Ronald McDonald House, American Red Cross and many, many more. In addition to Virginia’s full time job at Wells Fargo she leads and coordinates the volunteer events at Wells Fargo. She has coordinated 82 volunteer events in 2013 and personally logged over 350 volunteer hours.  Virginia now sits on the board of Grandma’s House of Hope and is bringing together Wells Fargo Volunteers to Nana’s Kids and Grandma’s House.  Virginia is an inspiration to all she unselfishly gives of her time a talent.
