Congrats to Annette Kennedy for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!
Nominating Organization: Susan G. Komen Orange County
Honoree Category: Health
Why Nominated: Annette started volunteering with us in 1998. She has volunteered in many capacities from helping at the front desk, to team mentoring, administrative duties and stuffing envelopes for mailers! In February 2011 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent treatment. Being a breast cancer survivor further fuelled her desire to connect with and support our affiliate. She continued to volunteer with us and in 2014, she really stepped it up and assisted the Volunteer Services Manager with the recruitment and training of over 100 Pink Tie Ball volunteers. She helped communicate with these volunteers in the lead up to the event and assisted with the coordination of volunteers on the night of the event.
She was especially skilled in placing volunteers in suitable roles to ensure the event ran smoothly. Her organizational skills and kind persistence were greatly appreciated by everyone she came in contact with. She also worked with NCL Chapter leaders last summer to develop a schedule for their volunteers to come to the office and help make key rings for outreach, distribute Race materials and help with other Race related tasks.
For the 2014 Race for the Cure, she joined the Race leadership Committee and agreed to be the volunteer liaison for the Knott’s Berry Farm One Mile Fun Family Walk on Race day. Knott’s Berry Farm was a new sponsor and they incorporated a new element having the Knott’s characters present along with a giveaway for the kids that came through the finish line. Annette supervised this area professionally and ensured that the race was a wonderful experience for all.
As a breast cancer survivor, Annette has always made it clear that she will do anything the Affiliate requests as long as she is able! We can count on her to follow through on any assignment and to always represent Komen in the best light. She is passionate about our cause, wonderful to work with, remains positive and enthusiastic while undertaking all her volunteer duties and is an invaluable asset to our organization.
Annette received the Volunteer of the Year Award at our Volunteer Recognition Event held on February 21, 2015.
