Congrats to Betty Hickey for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!
Nominating Organization: Huntington Beach Senior Services
Honoree Category: Human & Community
Why Nominated: Betty Hickey began volunteering with Huntington Beach Senior Services in 2007 and has become an indispensable part of this organization. In 2014 she served 950 hours!
Betty revived a defunct travel program and last year lead 750 travelers on 14 local trips which made a profit for the senior center of $2800! She recently took over the Rose Bowl Parade trip from the City of Huntington Beach Community Services Department and doubled the number of attendees. People who have taken trips with Betty rave about the Travel and Trips program and she has many repeat customers.
Because of the success she generated from the travel program, The Huntington Beach Council on Aging, (HBCOA) the nonprofit partner of the senior center, asked Betty to join their board. The HBCOA’s mission is work with elected officials, City staff, and volunteers to respond to the evolving needs of Huntington Beach senior citizens through advocacy and direct action on their behalf. Betty exemplifies the mission of the board.
In addition to the travel program, Betty also volunteers at the front desk of the senior center three times a week, gives tours of the center and information to new participants, trains other volunteers, and is a willing substitute whenever needed.
Betty also maintains her nursing license and volunteers at the first aid tents for senior services special events and fundraisers as well as responds to any emergencies at the center.
Betty exudes enthusiasm, is extremely capable and generates enthusiasm and motivation in other volunteers as well as staff. We truly cannot imagine what we are going to do if Betty leaves.
