Congrats to Carol Silver for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!
Nominating Organization: Serving People In Need, Inc.
Honoree Category: Human & Community
Why Nominated: Carol Silver saw a newspaper article about a young man working on his Eagle Scout project, who crocheted sleeping mats for the homeless from plastic bags for SPIN, and thought it was such a wonderful idea. The mats are used to cover the ground so that those sleeping on the ground will stay warm and dry. The mat-making process is very slow and tedious. The plastic is not easy to cut and crochet. It takes 40 hours to crochet one mat. Carol made one mat and then recruited a small group of ladies who also made mats for the homeless. That was only the beginning. She convinced more groups of women to help with this project. Because of Carol’s efforts, SPIN was able to hand out over 25 mats to Orange County homeless through our Street Service Program and there’s more in the making! Over 30 women to date have participated in this effort because of Carol Silver. SPIN thanks Carol and her friends for providing comfort to the homeless we serve living on the street.
