Honoree 2015 – Gigi Woodall

Congrats to Gigi Woodall for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!

Name:  Gigi Woodal

Nominating Organization:  Susan G. Komen Orange County

Honoree Category:  Health

Why Nominated:  At 16 years of age, Gigi started volunteering with us in July 2014. She helped at our reception desk on a weekly basis and handled many incoming calls about the Race for the Cure which is Susan G Komen Orange County’s largest and most well known annual fund and awareness raising event held at Fashion Island, Newport Beach. She also assisted with general office duties and projects related to the Race including packaging large quantities of Race promotional materials for distribution.

Soon after starting with us she established a Pink Ribbon Club at her school. She arranged for young breast cancer survivor, Krista Clark to speak to the Club about what they can do as young people to be proactive and to take care of themselves, as well as how to help loved ones with their breast cancer journey. Recently they made posters with breast cancer facts and hung them up around their school to spread awareness.

Gigi worked closely with our Volunteer Department to involve her Club members in the Race for the Cure. They were a part of the Pink Cheer Zone at the Race and Gigi attended the orientation training session for Pink Cheer Zone group volunteer leaders.

In Gigi’s words she describes her passion for our cause.” I am so passionate about what Komen is doing because both my mom and aunt are breast cancer survivors, and my grandma has also been recently cured of the disease. Seeing how much Komen is making a difference in finding a cure and motivating people to help with the cure, as well as raising money for mammograms made me want to help out in whatever way I could. Helping out also gave me some really good insight into breast cancer, which I am now able to incorporate into my club at Newport Harbor High School”.

Gigi received the Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award at our Affiliate’s Volunteer Recognition Event held on February 21, 2015 in recognition of her efforts throughout 2014. Young people are our future and with young people like Gigi in our midst, we have a bright future ahead!

Please write a note of congratulations below!
