Congrats to Joanne Macedo for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!
Nominating Organization: UnitedHealthcare
Honoree Category: Health
Why Nominated: When you see Joanne Macedo’s desk at UnitedHealthcare, the one thing you notice is a large cardboard thermometer that shows her goal of raising $500 for the American Heart and Stroke Association Walk in Orange County. Today, she’s at $350, but with her infectious enthusiasm and innovative plan of reaching out to her follow workers, friends and organizations in the community- She’s going to top that goal! Big Time! Life hasn’t been easy.
Joanne’s uncle died from a stroke last year. This has given her a personal connection to wanting to be involved. She’s also motivated to share how easy it is to prevent a stroke by eating healthy and exercise to prevent heart disease and stroke for others.
“The American Heart and Stroke Association Walk is one of my favorite events,” said Joanne Macedo. “I volunteered for the first time last year passing out pins and flyers at the walk. This year, I am serving as Captain of the UnitedHealthcare team and am dedicating my t-shirt to my uncle.” As UnitedHealthcare’s Captain of the American Heart and Stroke Association Walk, she is responsible for recruiting her fellow co-workers to be part of her team.
Joanne shares her goal with everyone she sees. Joanne believes it’s the personal connection she makes with people in the elevator, walking to and from her office from the parking lot or having coffee in the break room that inspires them to get involved in the walk and raise awareness about how to prevent heart disease and stroke. To meet her goal, she makes a point to talk up the program and designs flyers to post around the company. They have encouraged people to sign up and walk, buy pins or donate.
Joanne, not satisfied with raffling a single basket, is working extra hard to create three baskets filled with gift cards, UnitedHealthcare water bottles, pedometers and jump ropes.
In the community, Joanne shares her goal of raising $500 with her friends at Fit Camp in Anaheim, where the owners and friends from the health club plan to join her at the walk. She offers pins that display a red dress and bracelets that say “hope” for sale at $1 each for those who are unable to walk at the event.
“Joanne’s enthusiasm, passion and creativity is raising the bar for future events,” said Alex Uhm, Chief Operating Officer, for UnitedHealthcare of California, and 2015 Co-Chair of the UnitedHealthcare of California Social Responsibility Committee. “She is giving all she has to raise her goal and make a successful event.”
Joanne is an exceptional employee who graciously gives her time and talent to improve the overall health and well-being of the people in the local community. She is a shining example of UnitedHealthcare’s mission to help people live healthier lives and the Spirit of Volunteerism. Her work is greatly appreciated.
