Honoree 2015 – Ken Pearson

Congrats to Ken Pearson for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!

Name:  Ken Pearson

Nominating Organization:  OC Parks

Honoree Category:  Animals & Environment

Why Nominated:  OC Parks volunteer Ken Pearson, affectionately known as “Grandpa Ken” to thousands of school kids, has enthusiastically staffed the Irvine Park Nature Center every Wednesday since 2002. He fulfills critical staffing of the nature center during a difficult-to-fill weekday time slot, that would otherwise leave the building closed.

His presence and positive spirit enables school groups and general park visitors to experience the nature center and gain a broader understanding of Irvine Park’s significant natural and cultural resources. Ken’s smile and endearing attitude is infectious and evident through the endless compliments staff receives about him. Ken has gone above and beyond in his efforts as a volunteer with OC Parks. For example, in December 2014, he acquired and donated a life-like wood-carved American Golden Eagle display. This new centerpiece adds significant interpretive value to the nature center and enhances each visitor’s experience. Ken helps maintain the popular hands-on displays, such as Panning for Gold and the taxidermy touch table. Children love it when they use crayons at the coloring table and proudly give their picture to Ken to be posted on one of the walls. Ken shows initiative and willingly grabs a broom to sweep the front walkway or pops an educational video into the DVD when a crowd gathers at the theater room. When a light bulb burns out or an exhibit needs attention, Ken can be counted on to take notice and fill out a work order form for the rangers’ notification. Thank you “Grandpa Ken” for your continued altruistic dedication in sharing your love and knowledge of Irvine Park to those that step foot in the nature center.

Please write a note of congratulations below!
