Congrats to Ken Yamagata for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!
Nominating Organization: OC Parks
Honoree Category: Animals & Environment
Why Nominated: Ken has been a dedicated volunteer at Upper Newport Bay for many years now. On a weekly basis you will find him set up at along a popular path around the Bay to provide information, education and interpretation to visitors. In the afternoons, he provides front desk coverage at the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center.
Ken has shown long term dedication to Upper Newport Bay, having volunteered through the Newport Bay Conservancy since 2006. In that time he has contributed over 1,600 hours of service. His presence is consistent, but flexible, as he is willing to change his plans at the last minute to help out where ever is needed most.
When volunteering at the Muth Interpretive Center, Ken goes above and beyond normal “coverage”. His engaging personality makes visitors fell welcome and eager to ask questions. Ken always strives to find the best answers, sometimes prompting conversation and debate amongst staff and other volunteers. He encourages all of us to think a little deeper and seek out new information. Without Ken’s volunteer time, we would not be able to provide the high level of visitor interaction that we currently do. He is one of our most valuable assets at Upper Newport Bay and the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center.
