Congrats to Michael Shepard for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!
Nominating Organization: AccessOC, Southern California
Honoree Category: Health
Why Nominated: Our patient Joel Torres had sustained a knee injury, and had suffered from it for 3 years. He provides for his family by working as a handyman, which was made difficult by his inability to walk, stand, or kneel for long periods of time. Because his condition had gone untreated for so long, he also developed problems with his opposite knee and back. However, before Joel’s combination of chronic injury and heavy labor could cause any more harm, Dr. Michael Shepard joined AccessOC and took on his case. Dr. Shepard made a plan to donate two knee surgeries with a few months recovery in between, so Joel would not be prone to re-injury. Our organization exists because the cost of a single surgery to an uninsured patient is exorbitant. Dr. Shepard saw the necessity for both surgeries, and made sure Joel would have access to rehabilitation. We are constantly humbled by the compassion and giving spirit of our health care partners. It is our great pleasure to nominate Dr. Michael Shepard for the 2015 Spirit of Volunteerism Award!
