Congrats to Suzy McKown for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!
Nominating Organization: Families Forward
Honoree Category: Human & Community
Why Nominated: Suzy began volunteering with Families Forward over 10 years ago when she and her daughters joined National Charity League, a mother-daughter group that gives back to the community through volunteerism and philanthropy. Suzy and her daughters volunteered their time and skills in the Families Forward food pantry and with our Back to School Program, where they helped provide backpacks and school supplies to children for the start of each school year. The majority of their time was spent volunteering for our Transitional Housing Program, both within the homes and warehouse, where donations of furniture and household goods are sorted and stored. After receiving a family profile, Suzy and her daughters would begin with the inventory stage and see the home through completion, so that incoming families would have a safe and comfortable home. Suzy also organized collection drives in her neighborhood for household items that many incoming families would need to start off the program on the right foot.
Suzy and her daughters volunteered with Families Forward even after finishing their time with NCL, as they continued to be passionate about preparing homes for families who would be joining the Transitional Housing Program. Suzy continues to support Families Forward by volunteering several days each week in our warehouse, where she repairs, sorts, and processes furniture and household items that have been donated. When one of our transitional homes is vacant and in need of a quick turnover for an incoming family, Suzy and her volunteer partner, Ruby, will jump right into the home and prepare it for a family to move in.
Suzy’s willingness to give knows no boundaries – she and Ruby have spent countless hours inside our transitional homes washing rugs, sewing and repairing donations, and purchasing items or bringing in items from their own homes to make sure each family has just what they need to start their journey to self-sufficiency. Suzy is such an important part of our organization and our ability to give families a safe, comfortable place to live while they get back on their feet. We truly do not know where we would be without her!
