Congrats to Teresa Blanco for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!
Nominating Organization: Susan G. Komen Orange County
Honoree Category: Health
Why Nominated: Teresa’s niece Angela lost her battle to breast cancer in 2006. She was only 26 years old when she passed away. Through her loss Teresa became passionate about Komen’s mission and has become very involved with the work we do in the community.
She is a member of Unidos Contra el Cancer de Seno Coalition – an advisory group for Komen Orange County’s Latino Initiative. Because of Teresa we have been able to conduct outreach and screenings at Northgate Gonzalez Markets. They host our annual Unidos Conference providing no cost venue, breakfast, flowers and linens. They promote out mammography screening events in their weekly coupon/promotion flyer that has a circulation of 1.6 million in OC, LA and San Diego.
Teresa has developed this partnership model to engage Northgate Gonzalez markets with Komen Affiliates in San Diego and LA counties. In 2014 they ran a Tortilla Fundraising project which raised over $14,000 that was shared by the three county affiliates. She spoke about our partnership model at the 2014 La Raza Conference.
She donates funds to the Spanish speaking support group to purchase refreshments. In special circumstances she will procure food and vouchers for women undergoing cancer treatment with limited resources. In addition to all this, last year Teresa was the Team Captain for Northgate Team to Race for the Cure! They raised $10,695 and was awarded 3rd Place in the Small Corporate Team category.
Partnerships like these that are driven by individuals like Teresa who are so passionate about our cause are one of the reasons why we are able to be successful and effective in the work we do. With strong partners we make big things happen!
