Nominating Organization: California State University, Fullerton
Honoree Category: Education
Why Nominated: In 1988, former CSUF Vice President for Student Affairs Silas Abrego brought together some leaders in the community because he saw a need to raise scholarship funds for Hispanic underrepresented students. This decision led to the first CSUF Hispanic Scholarship Golf Tournament led by a group of committed volunteers. The first Tournament was attended by 79 players and raised $24,000. Today, the tournament regularly sells out and raises over $100,000 annually in support of Hispanic student scholarships. This is possible through the committee’s dedicated partnership to solicit individuals, corporations, and organizations throughout Southern California.
Over the past 27 years, the Hispanic Scholarship Golf Tournament has raised more than $1 million dollars for scholarships to support CSUF first-generation Hispanic students. Over 800 students have benefitted from this scholarship, which supports their dream of obtaining a college degree.
The committee members share a passion for the cause and their commitment to the students continues to prevail. The committee has grown to include individuals from local businesses, international corporations, and community leaders that share in their passion for education and a commitment to raising scholarship funds. And, they have cast their net far and wide to involve other community partners who want to support these deserving students.
The Hispanic Scholarship Golf Tournament committee embraces the University’s commitment to excellence and student success. They are more determined than ever to ensure that they can make a difference for students, especially first generation students, whose goals and dreams include completing their college education. It is through the individual commitment of the committee members that Cal State Fullerton continues to ensure an opportunity for educational success for these students to successfully pursue their degree at Cal State Fullerton.
In addition to the tournament, this Committee had the forethought for the past 27 years to annually support the Hispanic Scholarship Endowment at Cal State Fullerton. This endowment has now grown to $500,000, and insures scholarships will be available to Hispanic students at Cal State Fullerton in perpetuity.
