Honoree Category:  Human & Community

Why Nominated:  The Order of Malta deserves to be honored because of their longstanding commitment to the community and their unwavering dedication to working with Second Harvest and helping the organization realize its mission to end hunger in Orange County. The Order of Malta has a rich history dating back nearly 30 years of supporting Second Harvest through various avenues, including financial support and volunteerism. The Order’s and Second Harvest’s relationship, which is defined by smooth and regular communications between the two organizations, is one the Food Bank tries to emulate with other volunteer groups that contribute their time towards our mission.

The Order of Malta began volunteering with Second Harvest in 1999. Since then, the Order has contributed over 2,200 hours of volunteer service and provided the support of 755 volunteers. The Order of Malta’s dedication to improving the lives of struggling Orange County residents is also evidenced by their consistency of participation in volunteer efforts. The Order has volunteered on 72 separate occasions since the first group visited Second Harvest in August 1999, an average of more than one volunteer visit every quarter.

Volunteers have engaged in essential tasks at Second Harvest’s distribution center. These jobs included inspecting and sorting food as well as packaging boxes and bags of food that were ultimately distributed to some of the estimated 370,000 hungry residents of Orange County. The Order of Malta’s consistent and high-level of volunteer activity make them a worthy candidate that deserves to be recognized by Orange County’s nonprofit community.
