Honoree 2014 – Ed Steiner

Congrats to Ed Steiner for being honored as an outstanding community volunteer!

Steiner_EdName:  Ed Steiner

Nominating Organization:  Irvine Ranch Conservancy

Honoree Category:  Animals & Environment

Why Nominated:  Ed is one of the backbone volunteers of the Irvine Ranch Conservancy. Year after year, Ed deploys to almost every Fire Watch call-out, spending countless hours protecting the habitat of the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. Ed always seeks ways to help improve the Fire Watch program and our public activities. This past year, with Ed’s input, communications within the Fire Watch network were improved, and better positioning of volunteers improved coverage at critical sites on the land. Ed’s keen awareness led him to call in the Baker Canyon fire, and on a recent Fire Watch deployment Ed was witness to a motorcycle accident along Santiago Canyon Road. With his first aid & emergency training, Ed called 9-1-1, secured the scene, and kept the victim stabilized and calm until Emergency Services arrived; in both instances providing critical early intervention.  Additionally, Ed is a very active Trail Boss volunteer and hiking Docent, leading and assisting with a variety of fitness and interpretive programs. Ed frequently takes groups of people to visit the unique geological features on the Landmarks, sharing his passion for the rocks and wealth of information regarding the formations that are a main reason for the historic Irvine Ranch being selected as both a National and California Natural Landmark.
